Humble beginnings

February 3rd, 2009

I tore up the side yard that ran alongside the house. I rented a tiller and in the process of ripping up the sod found 2 cables buried in the ground and then there was an ooops moment when I realized I had cut a 3rd cable. My first thought was someone is going to be without cable and when I was done I mentioned the same to my wife. You where this is going when I went back in and turned on the T.V. I realized I had cut our cable!!. So we were without phone, internet and cable for a day or two till the cable company came around and fixed it.

Start mulching

Ripped up (notice cables!)

I laid down newspaper and have started mulching the area, I will cover the entire area with mulch and then start a small raised bed garden on one side. It’s dimensions TBD.

Humble Beginnings

Rosemary sprigs
Rosemary sprigs

This is the start of the edging around the porch primarily rosemary with other flowering plants or peppers sprinkled in. All the rosemary was grown from the “mother” plant in the front yard.

Gardening Ground Zero

These are pictures of my lawn today. Yes, it looks sorry - make that very sorry but thats the point I have neglected it for a long time and now would like to use organic and earth friendly ways and native plants and grasses to bring this yard back to life.

I am looking to create a landscape that uses the local conditions and can thrive without the use of chemicals, herbiscides and pesticides. It will take me a little while to understand what plants I am going to use, which ones fit best into the landscape etc..

I hope to draw the layout for the garden in the next few days. Walking (and digging!!) through the yard can be a little overwhelming so actually having a plan will give me a target to aim for and work towards.
I hope to draw on some inspiration from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

This also appeals to another of my hobbies - drawing and sketching and hopefully my garden layout will backup that conviction!

Action Plan

September 30th, 2008

I am a list type of person - it helps me organize and keep track of the things I have to do. So here is my list for phase 1 of the garden (Phase 1 deliverable being able to have things in place for a robust growing season for next year)

  1. Study and understand soil conditions (Send sample to UF extension - usually you can send samples of your garden soil to your local university extension for analysis to test and see if you soil is acidic, alkaline or neutral.)
  2. Raise ground level for composting bin (This area of our backyard always gets flooded when it rains and this cannot be good for the compost and the process)
  3. Build compost bin ( How to build a compost bin )
  4. Start composting process and add compost to amend the soil.
  5. Obtain and start sowing some seeds and/or cuttings

Hello world!

September 24th, 2008

Through this website I hope to share my experience in starting and growing my business, a hot sauce, herb and HOT (and I mean hot!! none of those wimpy fat banana peppers and stuff) pepper company to be yet named, it will probably be a more ethnic name because I am from India and an ethnic name might convey the “fiery” nature of the company while establishing a connection to my roots, pun intended ;)

Through this website I will chronicle my experiences in some distinct areas of this endeavor -Gardening, Growing a Business and Money Management. Each is near and dear to my heart and hopefully I can help some people along the way while helping myself and my family. Right now I am starting from Ground Zero, I will be posting pictures of my backyard which looks like a disaster zone because we are in the process of completing some remodelling - the pictures will speak for themselves. I hope to “grow” and share this experience and the lessons learned along the way. I plan to grow everything organically and leverage the natural hot climate of the state of Florida where we live. Needless to say peppers and herbs should do very well here because they love the heat. I have no experience running a business and have minimal experience gardening.

This is a learn as I go process and I invite you along for the journey!!
